A Dominion is a realm, land and a community where a person lives for most of his life.
The size and shape of the Dominion depends on the lifestyle & preferences of individual, and can vary to a great extent. Both the ability and desire to communicate with others influence and define the size of the Dominion.
1. In the early middle ages, most communities were small and people usually lived most of their lives within the confines of their native villages, towns or monasteries.
2. With the arrival of paper & printing press technologies it became possible to communicate information and knowledge to others across larger boundaries of time and distance.
For those willing to step-out of the confines of their previous dominions it was now possible to interact with a much larger community. The resulting exchange of ideas & experiences led to an explosion in knowledge, arts & trade known today as the Renaissance.
3. The speed at which interaction can take place with the use of paper & ink was still limiting. Coupled with slow ineffective transportation, this lead to a society where most people associated their lifestyles with that of their native or adopted region or country. The outsider, foreigners, would always be viewed with suspicion.
With the advent of telecommunication technologies & improved transportation infrastructure, we now experience a new social transition period, whereby those willing to step-out of the confines of their national Dominions can now interact with a much larger community.
What this will probably bring is an explosion…
