Finding God in the Park

Finding-God-in-the-Park-860x478

Abe was fiercely independent, even at age 85, but after a mild stroke his son insisted he move in with him. Abe missed going to the park near his old apartment, and one Saturday he set out to find it.

When he became disoriented, he asked a young boy named Timmy where the park was. Timmy said he’d like to take him there, but he didn’t have time because he was looking for God. He said he needed to talk to Him about why his parents were getting a divorce.

“Maybe God’s in the park,” the old man said. “I’d like to talk to Him, too, about why He’s made me useless.” And so they set off together to find God.

At the park, Timmy began to cry about the divorce, and Abe lovingly held his face in both hands and looked him straight in the eyes. “Timmy, I don’t know why bad things happen, but I know it wasn’t because of you. I know you’re a good boy and your parents love you and they will always love you. I know you will be okay.”

Timmy gave Abe a big hug and said, “I’m so glad I met you. Thanks. I think I can go now.”

From across the street, Timmy’s mother saw them hug and approached her son in a worried voice. “Who was that old man?”

“I think he’s God,” Timmy said.

“Did he say that?” she demanded.

“No, but when he touched me and told me I’m going to be okay, I felt really better. Only God can do that.”

When Abe got home, his son asked in a scolding voice, “Where were you?”

“I was in the park with God.”

“Really? What makes you think you were with God?”

“Because He sent me a boy who needed me, and when the boy hugged me, I felt God telling me I wasn’t useless anymore.”

SERENITY

Serenity

Calmness of mind is one of the beautiful jewels of wisdom.  It is the result of long and patient effort in self-control.  Its presence is an indication of ripened experience, and of a more than ordinary knowledge of the laws and operations of thought.

A man becomes calm in the measure that he understands himself as a thought-evolved being, for such knowledge necessitates the understanding of others as the result of thought, and as he develops a right understanding, and sees more and more clearly the internal relations of things by the action of cause and effect, he ceases to fuss and fume and worry and grieve, and remains poised, steadfast, serene.

The calm man, having learned how to govern himself, knows how to adapt himself to others; and they, in turn, reverence his spiritual strength, and feel that they can learn from him and rely upon him.  The more tranquil a man becomes, the greater is his success, his influence, his power for good.  Even the ordinary trader will find his business prosperity increase as he develops a greater self-control and equanimity, for people will always prefer to deal with a man whose demeanor is equable.

The strong, calm man is always loved and revered.  He is like a shade-giving tree in a thirsty land, or a sheltering rock in a storm.  “Who does not love a tranquil heart, a sweet-tempered, balanced life?  It does not matter whether it rains or shines, or what changes come to those possessing these blessings, for they are always sweet, serene, and calm.  That exquisite poise of character which we call serenity is the last lesson of culture; it is the flowering of life, the fruitage of the soul.  It is precious as wisdom, more to be desired than gold—yea, than even fine gold.  How insignificant mere money-seeking looks in comparison with a serene life—a life that dwells in the ocean of Truth, beneath the waves, beyond the reach of the tempests, in the Eternal Calm!”

“How many people we know who sour their lives, who ruin all that is sweet and beautiful by explosive tempers, who destroy their poise of character, and make bad blood!  It is a question whether the great majority of people do not ruin their lives and mar their happiness by lack of self-control.  How few people we meet in life who are well balanced, who have that exquisite poise which is characteristic of the finished character!”

Yes, humanity surges with uncontrolled passion, is tumultuous with ungoverned grief, is blown about by anxiety and doubt.  Only the wise man, only he whose thoughts are controlled and purified, makes the winds and the storms of the soul obey him.

Tempest-tossed souls, wherever you may be, under whatsoever conditions ye may live, know this—in the ocean of life the isles of Blessedness are smiling, and the sunny shore of your ideal awaits your coming.  Keep your hands firmly upon the helm of thought.  In the barque of your soul reclines the commanding Master; He does but sleep; wake Him. Self-control is strength; Right Thought is mastery; Calmness is power.  Say unto your heart, “Peace be still!”

You are an Infinite Soul

Imagine what life would be like if you lived a day, a week or a month without believing or promoting ONE excuse. What would your life look like?

We have some pretty ingrained excuses – many of them that seem real to us. There is a difference between an EXCUSE and a description of your current circumstance. We can confuse the two. Usually your current circumstances BECOME an excuse and it’s easy to hide behind it because no one can argue with your circumstance. But I believe that you are MORE than your circumstance and that you can, through trial, effort and faith, transcend your circumstance.

Why?

Because you are NOT your circumstance. You are SO much more than that!

You are an Infinite Soul connected to the Infinity of The Divine and for a short while, you are in this body that you inhabit.

When you identify with The Divine, with your Source and with your Soul (and not your circumstances), you take the first step in transcending your limitations.

Here are some circumstances that become ingrained excuses:

– I don’t have enough (time, money, connections, creativity, etc.)

– I’m too (old, fat, young, out of date, tired)

– I’m not (smart enough, tall enough, wise enough, brave enough, enough)

There are MANY more, but this is a short list. It might be true that this is your circumstance, but you are NOT your circumstance. And the more you affirm and identify with your circumstance, the more you will create it. Because what we focus on is what expands and becomes real in our lives.

So, what if you began to see your excuses not as excuses – but as circumstances? And what if you believed that you are more than and could transcend your circumstance? What would life be like a day, a week or a month from now? What if you suspended belief and took a risk?

What if you trusted the subtle whispering within you beckoning you out into the unknown realm of your dreams and potential?

What if you decided to no longer make your excuses your identity, but instead your circumstance – and then get about the business of changing your circumstance?

Not through painstaking effort, but through prayer, meditation, service, solving other people’s problems, personal growth and making Love the bottom line. What if taking steps out in Faith became the new norm? What if you took total responsibility for your life, right now, as it is? You may not have been fully responsible for what happened to you, but you are now responsible for how you engage with and meet your life circumstances.

You are so much more than you are giving yourself credit to be, and you have so much more help and assistance that is yearning to come to your aid, if you but allow it to. Be still.

Listen. Identify with the Infinite, make this a new lifelong practice and then get out of your own way.

Can you?

What would your life look like if you did?

Everything is God Given

I write a blog about money a few times a year because I think there is a lot of guilt, shame and confusion around money in the spiritual community.

There’s this idea that you can’t be spiritual and rich, or if you are – you have screwed people over to get there.

There’s this idea that you shouldn’t charge for God given talents like intuition or insights.

But – last time I checked, all talents are God given. The talent to play basketball, the talent to write, the talent to sing, the talent to act, or be a doctor – are all God given.

For the talents to be fully realized, we must practice and learn and apply a ton of hard work, but nonetheless the raw talent came pre-installed.

And yet, we seem to have some block around certain types of God given talent.

The idea that a rich person can’t enter the Kingdom of Heaven is widely used to take vows of poverty, but what Jesus meant when He said that was if you WORSHIP money and make it your God, then you’ll never be happy.

But you can have a lot of money and still be focused on The Divine.

You can also not have a lot of money and be so focused on money that you forget your connection to the Divine.

Money, like everything else, is a symbol for energy. That is it.

And the more of it we have, the more we can help ourselves, those that we love and others.

There is nothing spiritual about playing a small money game.

I also don’t believe that when you are a healer or life coach you are charging for the teachings.

All the wisdom teachings are readily available for free on the internet. Anyone who has access to the internet has access to the wisdom of the ages.

When you charge for your services, what you are charging for is your time and the facilitation of the teachings.

Your time and your wisdom are very valuable.

I know people who went to college for years and years and have six figure debts that never learned the things spiritually.

What is that worth?

I believe it’s important to give away scholarships, free content and help those who need it so that personal growth isn’t just something for “the rich.” But I also believe that healers who don’t charge what they are worth are doing themselves a major disservice and as a result, a disservice to their clients.

The guilt and shame around charging money for healing services is a way for many practitioners to play small.

The greater your cup is full, the more you have to give away.

Are you playing small by hiding behind prices you know are too cheap?

Are you scared to step up and play a bigger game?

Are you running yourself ragged and capped at a certain income because you are afraid to raise your rates?

Are you triggered by the rates of other healers?

Don’t you think you are worth investing in? And also being paid well for the value that you add to the world?

What would your life look like if you cast those fears aside and actually did what you knew you had to?

I’m curious.

Stay connected to who you are!

What does that mean?

It means to remember that at your center you are Love, abundance and joy. You have come here not to be needy and take, but to be full and give away to the world from that place of fullness.

When you remember who you are, the desire to chase, to grasp and to yearn stops. You remember that you are a child of The Uni-verse and were created to fulfill a very special purpose.

You remember that one of the great promises of Life is that you will be provided for as you walk along the path of your dreams. The fearful mind calms and the mind full of Faith emerges.

You remember that you are enough as you are and that nothing can prove otherwise, other than your own admission that you are less than who you really are.

When you remember who you really are, you surround yourself with loving people. You bask in the fellowship of Love and no longer accept or tolerate abuse and hate.

You pull back from judging others and instead keep your eyes on Love and purifying your own desires and intentions.

You line up your thoughts with Love and then the actions and the fruits of Love naturally follow. You let go of the need to control and let The Uni-verse fill in the gaps, because The Uni-verse is very intelligent and knows what you need even more than you do.

When you remember who you really are, you Love yourself and your Creator enough to take care of your body with healthy foods, exercise, yoga and breath. You Love your mind enough to not let it run the show, and instead make time for meditation to calm it down so your Love and Spirit shine through.

When you remember who you are, you embrace challenge and catastrophe with acceptance rather than disdain. You know that with the Light comes the Dark and that both are needed in the dance of Life.

When you remember who you are, you are attractive to those who believe what you believe. You don’t see rejection as bad, but rather as a sorting device keeping unhealthy matches away from you. You naturally and effortlessly find Love because you already embody It.

When you remember who you are, life ceases to become difficult and transforms into an adventure you can’t wait to take.

When you remember who you are, you live your life following your Heart so that when you get to the end, you say: “What a ride!” instead of wondering, “What if I had…?”

Remember who you are today and all this & more will be yours.

To Be Both Human & Spirit

Triggers happen.

They do.

There’s nothing we can do to stop them – because it is through our triggers that we learn about ourselves.

I still get triggered. Someone says something. Someone does something. Something happens.

BOOM – nice ME is GONE and triggered ME is there.

It’s inevitable.

I’ve come to believe that the journey is really about seeking the peace within the chaos – the Truth within the trigger.

Life is not about NOT being triggered. Life is about bringing LOVE and AWARENESS to our triggers and moments when our emotions come up.

You see, a lot of people I know make the mistake of shooting for a “spiritual bypass” – where they try to deny their humanness – they try to deny their emotions, they try to put their negativity and triggers in a box – and then pretend they don’t exist.

And then – over time – they stack up – and BOOM – you have a breakdown, an emotional explosion or other expression.

Having these doesn’t mean something is wrong with you. It means you are human.

Here we advocate a full acceptance and expression of your human nature. This lets us be fully alive. From there, we also believe in tapping into the higher awareness that is your Soul, that is the observer of the human mind and emotions.

We are part spirit, part human. To deny either is to deny who you are.

We can’t sit around and just justify our negativity as “being human”. And we also can’t not express ourselves because we are “spiritual”. We need both.

This is the beautiful balance that we get to walk as spiritual beings having a human experience.

I have found that when I let myself express, when I allow myself to be who I am – without any judgment – amazing things happen.

And once I express myself – without judgment, I do my best to bring my awareness, my Soul perspective into the moment.

My aim is to have my Soul awareness be there as I am being triggered, so that I catch myself faster.

We all have triggers. We all have intense emotions, both dark and light. These are not good or bad – they are just information.

We must allow ourselves to express ourselves, we must allow ourselves to be FULLY human and FULLY spirit.

This dance is the dance that allows the greatest version of life to be lived.

So the underlying question remains How can you allow yourself to be both human and spirit?
